In-Season for February

Matters of the heart are always important, but especially so during the month of February. Not only is there Valentine's Day to think about, February is also American Heart Month. This is a good time to evaluate your food choices and the impact they may have on your heart. Fresh, in season fruits and vegetables are among the best choices you can make for your heart health.

Holidays

Chinese New Year

Prepare a delicious Chinese stir-fry using vegetables like Bok Choy, Napa Cabbage, broccoli, snow peas and green beans or Chinese long beans. Traditional seasonings like fresh garlic and ginger, soy sauce and just a sprinkling of red chili flakes will add just the right flavor.

Mardi Gras

Put on a pot of Gumbo and let the party begin! Fresh herbs and veggies are an important part of this classic Creole stew. Tomatoes, onions, garlic, sweet peppers, collard greens, bay leaf, and of course okra are all favorite additions. Variations include chicken, sausage and shrimp gumbo, and many recipes include all three.

Super Bowl

Game day is often an occasion for indulgence, but that doesn't mean fresh produce can't be the star player on your snack table. Fresh vegetables with dip are always a hit at parties, and the crowd is sure to go wild when you bring out a bowl of freshly prepared guacamole!

Valentine's Day

Start your Valentine's dinner with a fresh green salad topped with citrus, toasted nuts, and crumbled cheese for a great combination of flavors and textures. Asparagus is just coming into season; these sensual stalks make a great side for any entree from beef to seafood. End the meal with a rich dessert complemented by fresh fruit.
